The Area International Speech and Evaluation Contest took place this week. We were joined on the night by members from Failte Club, Charleville, Galtee Club, Mithcelstown. Fermoy Toastmasters and the Rosscarbery Club.
President Marie Fitzpatrick welcomed all in attendance, before handing over control of the meeting to Contest Chair, Pat Duggan from Guardians Club, Cork. Liam Flynn was Topicsmaster with topics ranging from “What would you like to Invent?” and “Do people become too attached to their heroes?” Timekeepers were Claire O’Connell and Johanna Hegarty and the Chief Judge was Ray Ryan
The first speaker for the evening was Eilis Úi Bhrian from Fermoy with a speech titled T’Athair Peadar O’Laoire” She recounted the story of the Parish Priest of Castlelyons in the 1800s who was passionate about the Irish language.
The second speaker was Bobby Buckley with a speech titled “Run for the Sublime.” Next up was Brendan Foley with a speech titled “Blissful Confusion.” Kevin Walsh of the Fermoy Club entertained us with a speech titled “Summers of Love.” The final speaker was Mary Meaney from the Galtee Club , Mitchestown with a speech titled “Youth Leadership in Toastmasters.”
Next was the Evaluation Contest. John Keating from the Rosscarbery Club delivered the test speech titled “The F Word“ He outlined the concept of Fear and how we can overcome it.
Well done to all who took part to make such a well run meeting. It was a hard fought battle and the winners of the Speech Contest were Kevin Walsh and Bobby Buckley and the winners of the Evaluation Contest were Pat Sexton and Marie Fitzpatrick. All four will be going through to the Divisional Final which will take place in Limerick on Saturday 8th April.
